The Great, Wild Outdoors             -Explore near and far:

The Grand Portage Environmental Department and Oshki Ogimaag Charter School have collaborated with the purpose of utilizing community partners to enhance community environmental education. Students will benefit from the knowledge, history, and rich physical environmental of the Reservation: 56,000 acres of forests, creeks, and ponds along the 52 miles of Lake Superior Shoreline shore line through hands on learning.

Students will learn traditional seasonal activities such as harvesting wild rice, collecting maple sap, and uses of native vegetation.  They will learn how to observe seasonal change, and as a result will understand the life giving qualities of Mother Earth. Respecting and honoring her is critical for our traditional ways to continue. Following the premise that all time and space holds opportunities for exploration and learning, Oshki Ogimaag will strive to be a “school without walls” in its utilization of satellite classrooms outside of the school building. This involves utilizing the Grand Portage Environmental Department, Grand Portage State Park as well as other community programs. The school will also develop a nature area, community gardens, and community outreach.
